Dr. W. Hubert Keen, president of Farmingdale State College, is proud to announce that Professor Serdar Elgun, mechanical engineering technology, is one of only two Long Island professors designated as Distinguished Service Professor by the SUNY Chancellor and Board of Trustees in 2007.

The Distinguished Service Professorship honors and recognizes extraordinary service. Candidates must have demonstrated substantial distinguished service not only at the campus and the State University , but also at the community, regional and state levels. To be considered appropriate, service must exceed the work generally considered to be a part of a candidate's basic professional work and should include service that exceeds that for which professors are normally compensated.

Professor Elgun, a resident of Brookhaven, is highly regarded both locally and nationally in the areas of emerging manufacturing technologies and renewable energy sources.  He has been instrumental in advancing non-credit training for local corporations through the College. Additionally, Professor Elgun was a crucial part of the training of more than 300 professionals to design and implement solar energy facilities in residential buildings in the region. He is recognized by both students and colleagues as dynamic, energetic, caring, compassionate and responsive.

Professor Elgun earned a BS in mechanical engineering from Aegean University of Ismir-Turkey and an MS from Mississippi State University .

"SUNY faculty who receive appointment to the distinguished ranks provide a glimpse of the broad service contributions and the career achievements being made on our campuses across New York State . Each of these individuals has met and exceeded the requirements for these honors and I commend the Board of Trustees for recognizing their talent and service by approving their appointments to distinguished ranks," said former Chancellor Ryan.
