Welcome to the Nursing Department

The faculty of the Department of Nursing believes that professional nursing practice is dynamic, responsive, and essential to a changing health care system. Nurses provide patient-centered care within a framework of ethical principles, legal guidelines, and standards of practice to ensure safe, quality, competent care. Through evidence-based practice, nurses integrate reliable evidence in clinical decision-making and management of care to promote, maintain and restore health. Therapeutic communication and caring interventions are integral to culturally sensitive humanistic nursing care.

As part of a comprehensive college public college, the Nursing Department at Farmingdale State College embracing ethics, culture and aesthetics, prepares graduates with knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential for current and future needs of interdependent global communities. The teaching learning encompasses collaborative relationships that require active engagement to create excellence in learning, scholarship, research, and service to society. The faculty acknowledges that learners’ needs vary according to their developmental stage, cultural background, previous experiences, and diverse learning styles. An optimal education environment leads to changes in perception, thinking, feelings, and action as demonstrated by behavior. The faculty is committed to a humanistic educational philosophy that encourages the development of a spirit of inquiry, social awareness, self care, integration of information technology, and interdisciplinary collaboration to provide competent and accountable nursing care in a variety of settings. Nursing education empowers graduates to be critical thinkers, citizens, scholars, professionals, and leaders, and to pursue continued education as a goal-directed, lifelong process.

  Nursing Program Outcomes

At the completion of the BS nursing program, graduates will:

Synthesize knowledge from liberal arts and sciences, humanities and nursing to provide holistic and patient centered care that promotes empowerment and optimal well-being of individuals, families and communities.

Practice professional nursing incorporating caring, respect, diversity, integrity, ethics, and the influences of human responses on illness, suffering and healing to assist individuals, families and communities to achieve maximal fulfillment.

Demonstrate knowledge, critical thinking, and evidence-based clinical judgments to provide therapeutic nursing care interventions for patients throughout the lifespan, for families and communities with multiple and complex health stressors in a variety of settings.

Use effective communication to collaborate with patients, colleagues, and members of the interprofessional health team to improve health care outcomes for patients, families and communities.

Incorporate principles of safety, health information technology, organizational and health care systems theory, quality improvement, and political trends in the provision of high quality and safe patient care.

Express an identity of self as a bachelor prepared nurse and exhibit professional values and behaviors as described by ethical, legal, and professional standards of practice.

Apply leadership, advocacy, and management strategies in multiple settings to advocate for high quality, safe, accessible, and fiscally responsible healthcare.

Participate in activities that contribute to advancement of the profession including developing autonomy, advocacy, activism, change, and responsible citizenship.

Integrate evidence-based findings, research, and nursing theory in decision making in nursing practice.

Engage in self-reflection and life-long learning to maintain competence as a member of the profession and to achieve personal goals for professional development.

The School is accredited by the New York State Department of Education; nursing programs are approved by the New York State Office of the Professions.

The department of nursing graduates take the licensing examination in nursing.   The NCLEX-RN pass rates for the last four years are

  • 2016: 94.74%
  • 2017: 93.94%
  • 2018: 98.36%
  • 2019: 100%

On March 9th, 10th, and 11th the Department of Nursing at Farmingdale State College will host a site visit from the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), a nationally recognized accrediting agency for baccalaureate and graduate degree programs in nursing education. As part of the process for our continued accreditation, CCNE policy requires that we provide an opportunity for the program’s constituents to submit, in writing, comments concerning our program’s qualifications for accreditation.

We invite participation in this process from faculty, students, and the campus community. Written and signed comments will be accepted by CCNE until February 6th 2020. Please include the name, address, and telephone number of the person providing comments. These comments are shared with the team prior to the visit, but at no time during the review process are these comments shared with the program.
